Production costing & BOMs

Know what every batch really costs to make.

Keep several bills of materials for one product, pick the right one automatically, and add labour and overhead to the cost of what you make. Cost reports show material, labour and overhead per order and per product.

  • Many bills of materials per product, one default
  • Labour and overhead added to production cost
  • Cost per order and per product, material, labour and overhead
  • Planned against actual labour hours

What is Production costing & BOMs in Flowyana?

Flowyana production costing is manufacturing software that works out what each product really costs to make. A product can have several bills of materials, the list of components and quantities that make one batch, and each production order uses the right one. Labour and overhead can be added to the cost, so stock is valued at more than raw material alone. It suits bakeries, food and beverage producers, workshops, garment makers and small factories in India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.

Many small producers cost their goods on materials only. Wages, power and rent are left out, so stock looks cheaper than it is and margins look better than they are. When labour and overhead are added, the cost of each finished unit includes them and the profit you see is closer to the truth.

The same bill of materials can serve more than one job. Production orders draw the components from stock and receive the finished goods, and sales of a recipe item can deduct its components when sold. A product can keep a standard recipe and a different one for large batches or for one branch, and the system picks between them by rule.

Adding labour and overhead to production cost is a setting you turn on. While it is off, production runs on material cost alone and the labour and overhead lines read zero.

What it does

Production costing & BOMs, in practice.

Many bills of materials per product

Keep a standard recipe, a large-batch recipe and a seasonal one for the same product. Exactly one is the default.

The right recipe picked for you

A production order uses the bill of materials that is active on the date, for that branch and batch size, and falls back to the default. You can still choose another by hand.

Branch overrides and validity dates

Give a branch its own recipe that overrides the general one, and set from and until dates so a recipe retires on schedule.

By-products and wastage

Record by-products on a recipe and a wastage percentage on each component, in the unit you stock or in another unit that converts to it.

Labour and overhead lines

Add labour and overhead to a recipe or to a single order as hours times a rate, a fixed amount, or a percentage of material cost.

A switch you control

Adding labour and overhead to production cost is optional and off until you turn it on in Production settings.

Cost stamped at completion

When an order is completed, its material, labour and overhead are recorded, and the cost of the finished goods includes them.

Production cost report

Material, labour, overhead and cost per unit for each completed order or each product, with a trend over time.

Labour hours report

Planned hours against actual hours and the variance, so you see which steps run over.

Applied against actual

A report compares the labour and overhead absorbed into your products with what the books show was actually spent.

How it works

Production costing & BOMs, step by step.

  1. 1

    Write the bill of materials

Pick the product, the quantity one run makes, and its components with quantities, units and wastage. Add by-products and preparation steps if you use them.

  2. 2

    Add more recipes where needed

Add alternative recipes for a batch size, a branch or a date range, and mark one as the default.

  3. 3

    Switch on labour and overhead

In Production settings, turn on adding labour and overhead to production cost, then add lines to your recipes as hours, fixed amounts or a percentage of material.

  4. 4

    Run the order

Create a production order, check the recipe it picked, issue the materials from stock, then complete the order with the quantity made and scrapped.

  5. 5

    Read the cost

Open the production cost report for cost per unit by order or by product, and the labour hours report for plan against actual.

In depth

A closer look.

Several bills of materials for one product

A single recipe rarely fits every case. Flowyana lets a product hold as many bills of materials as you need. One is the default. Others can apply only between two dates, only at one branch, or only for a range of batch sizes. When an order is created, the system picks by rule: a recipe you chose explicitly wins, then the one active on the date, with a branch-specific recipe ahead of a general one, then the one that fits the batch size, then the default.

  • Exactly one default recipe per product
  • Valid-from and valid-until dates
  • A branch can override the general recipe
  • Minimum and maximum batch size per recipe

Labour and overhead in the cost of what you make

Add labour lines, such as assembly or packing, and overhead lines, such as electricity, to a recipe. Each line is hours times a rate, a fixed amount, or a percentage of the material cost. They are copied onto the production order, where you can adjust them and record the actual hours. When the order is completed, the cost of the finished goods includes material, labour and overhead.

  • Hours times rate, fixed amount or percent of material
  • Copied from the recipe, adjustable per order
  • Optional, and off until you switch it on
  • Orders completed while it is off record no labour or overhead

Cost reports you can act on

The production cost report shows material, labour, overhead and cost per unit for each completed order or grouped by product, with a trend over time and the share of cost that is labour and overhead. Where an order produced goods but issued no material, its material is shown as an estimate and flagged. The labour hours report sets planned hours against actual hours for each kind of work.

  • By order or by product, with a trend
  • Estimated material clearly flagged
  • Planned against actual labour hours
  • A conversion cost widget for the dashboard

Applied against actual spend

Absorbing labour and overhead into stock is only honest if you check it against what was spent. The applied against actual report compares the labour and overhead credited to production with the spending recorded in your books, and shows whether you are under or over absorbing.

  • Under- and over-absorbed shown plainly
  • You choose which ledgers count as actual spend
  • Part of the Production app’s reports

Who it’s for

Businesses that run on Production costing & BOMs.

Bakeries and food producers

A standard recipe, a large-batch recipe for wholesale orders, and labour for mixing and packing in the cost of every loaf.

Small factories

Assembly hours and factory overhead absorbed into finished goods, with planned hours checked against actual.

Garment and furniture makers

Different recipes by size or season, by-products tracked, and cost per unit by product.

Restaurants and central kitchens

Recipes with wastage per component, and a branch-specific recipe where one kitchen does it differently.

Cosmetics and consumer goods makers

Batch recipes with a validity date, so an old formula retires when the new one starts.

Questions

Asked about production costing & boms.

What is a bill of materials?

A bill of materials, or BOM, is the list of components and quantities needed to make one batch of a product. In Flowyana it also holds by-products, wastage and preparation steps, and the production order copies it so you can issue the materials from stock.

Can one product have more than one BOM?

Yes. A product can have many bills of materials, with exactly one marked as the default. Others can be limited by dates, by branch or by batch size.

How does Flowyana choose which BOM an order uses?

A recipe you pick by hand wins. Otherwise the system takes the active recipe valid on the date, preferring one set for that branch, then one that fits the batch size, then the default.

Does it add labour and overhead to product cost?

Yes, if you switch it on in Production settings. Labour and overhead lines on a recipe or order are included in the cost of the finished goods when the order is completed. It is off until you turn it on.

How is labour or overhead calculated?

Each line is hours times a rate per hour, a fixed amount, or a percentage of the material cost.

Can I see the cost per unit of each product?

Yes. The production cost report gives material, labour, overhead, total and cost per unit, grouped by completed order or by product.

Does it compare planned and actual labour hours?

Yes. The labour hours report shows planned hours against actual hours and the variance for each kind of labour.

Is there manufacturing software with costing for small businesses in India or the UAE?

Yes. Production costing is part of Flowyana, used by small producers in India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere, with costs in your workspace currency.

Does it do machine scheduling or shop-floor planning?

No. It covers recipes, production orders, material issue, completion, costing and reports. It does not schedule machines or plan capacity.

Can I add labour and overhead after the order is completed?

No. Cost is recorded when the order is completed, and orders completed while the setting is off read zero labour and overhead.

Do sales use the same BOM?

Optionally. A recipe item can be set to deduct its components when sold, and the same rules pick the recipe by branch and date.
